Job Description

Historic Project Architect

Locations: Madison, WI (preferred) | Des Moines, IA (ideal) | Open to other studio locations

Shape the Future of the Past

Are you an architect who thrives on complexity, craftsmanship, and history? Do you enjoy uncovering how buildings were originally constructed—and figuring out how to thoughtfully preserve them for the next century?

Our client is seeking a Historic Project Architect to join a nationally respected historic preservation practice working on some of the Midwest’s most significant and meaningful buildings—many more than 100 years old. This is an opportunity to step into a leadership role, guide teams, and work on projects that become lifelong client relationships and cultural landmarks.

This role is ideal for an experienced architect who wants challenge, variety, and purpose—without being siloed or stuck behind the scenes.

What You’ll Do

As a Historic Project Architect, you will lead restoration and rehabilitation projects from early assessment through construction administration, working closely with the Historic Practice Leader, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.

Project Leadership & Technical Expertise

  • Lead historic assessments, research, and documentation to understand original construction methods, materials, and conditions
  • Evaluate and plan restoration of masonry, windows, clay tile, slate roofs, copper roofs, and other historic assemblies
  • Develop preservation and rehabilitation strategies aligned with national, state, and local standards
  • Prepare detailed drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for historic projects
  • Guide projects through all phases—from study and design through construction administration

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients including municipalities, nonprofits, churches, and cultural institutions
  • Participate in client presentations, design reviews, and stakeholder meetings
  • Collaborate with clients on funding strategies, including historic tax credits (training provided if needed)
  • Work with regulatory agencies such as SHPO, NPS, FEMA, and other governing bodies

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Lead and mentor project teams of 3–4 architects and designers
  • Provide hands-on guidance and technical review to younger staff
  • Foster a collaborative, learning-focused environment
  • Coordinate closely with engineers, consultants, and contractors

Construction & Fieldwork

  • Lead bid procurement and construction phases
  • Review contractor work, submittals, mock-ups, and samples
  • Conduct field investigations and site visits (including crawl spaces, scaffolding, and lifts—training provided)

Types of Projects You’ll Work On

  • State and county historic projects (60+ across multiple states)
  • Churches, nonprofits, and cultural landmarks
  • Buildings eligible for historic tax credits
  • Structures over 100 years old with unique construction challenges
  • Projects requiring deep research, analysis, and creative problem-solving

What Success Looks Like

  • Taking ownership of complex historic projects and moving them forward with confidence
  • Building long-term relationships with repeat, mission-driven clients
  • Leading teams with clarity, mentorship, and technical excellence
  • Becoming a trusted leader within the historic practice—and potentially stepping into future business development opportunities

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture (historic preservation focus preferred)
  • Licensed Architect
  • 10+ years of professional experience, including at least 5 years leading historic restoration projects
  • Deep knowledge of architectural history, historic materials, preservation standards, and best practices
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with Revit, Bluebeam, Adobe InDesign, and related tools
  • Ability to balance leadership, technical rigor, and collaboration
  • Willingness to perform hands-on fieldwork

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

  • Work on one-of-a-kind historic projects with lasting cultural impact
  • Be part of a hands-on, mentoring culture —not a corporate machine
  • Lead meaningful work while continuing to learn and grow
  • Opportunity to influence future business development and practice growth
  • Flexible location options with Madison and Des Moines as strong hubs
