Job Description
Role:
The Herd Manager will be responsible for overseeing the herd health team's daily and weekly jobs, ensuring effective communication with supervisors and staff, and promoting a positive work environment.
Responsibilities:
Plan and execute herd health team's daily and weekly jobs.
Communicate needs with supervisors and other staff members.
Work closely with the Dairy Manager to set goals and complete tasks.
Monitor general herd health of milking herd, fresh cows, and dry and pre-fresh cows.
Oversee reproduction and vet checks.
Regularly monitor herd SCC and mastitis and use protocols to maintain low levels.
Supervise hoof care, including communication with hoof trimmer.
Perform work on sore feet as needed.
Directly supervise the herd health team including scheduling and conflicts.
Oversee facilities to promote cow comfort and productivity including management of curtains, doors, fans, stalls, waterers, etc.
Organize repair and maintenance with shot team.
Manage IVF donors for success and communicate regularly with IVF team.
Work closely with the Dairy Manager for optimal parlor performance, milk quality, and mastitis.
Promote organization, cleanliness, and safety in your entire area of accountability, including both inside barns and outside areas.
Description:
Herd manager will work with a team to execute the following:
Perform routine Ovsynch, flush shots, and vaccinations.
Monitor general herd health and identify cows needing attention.
Perform dry offs, treatments, and daily breeding.
Use SCR to help identify and diagnose.
Monitor herd somatic cell count and mastitis incidence.
Herd health w/ vet.
Oversee maternity area and calvings, direct personnel for healthy fresh cows and calves.
Plan and communicate schedules for day, week, and month.
Order all drugs and supplies.
Generate reports and enter data in Dairy Comp.
Communicate w/ owners, dairy manager, nutritionist, herd vet, calf manager, and hoof trimmer on matters that impact herd health, productivity, and cost control.

Qualifications:
A minimum of 2 years of herd management experience or training is required.
Must be bi-lingual in Spanish.
Continuing education is encouraged regularly.
Skills:
Strong communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with a team.
Experience in herd health management.
Preferred:
Experience with Dairy Comp software.
Knowledge of reproductive management.
