Major Duties

  • Serves as an Environmental Protection Specialist in DLA, supporting Field Activities disposing of Hazardous Materials/Waste.
  • Reviews Federal environmental laws/regulations: TSCA, RCRA, CERCLA, DoT regulations, and applicable state/local environmental regulations regarding hazardous property management and control within the DoD/DoW disposal and storage facilities programs
  • Generates reports, develops metrics, analyzes performance data, and participates in training development to improve environmental operations.
  • Develops, implements, and advises on environmental policies, procedures, plans, and programs for DLA Disposition Services, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates with team members and conducts environmental compliance audits and documentation for field activities, HW Disposal Contractors' Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs) and hazardous property sales customers.
  • Researches, analyzes, and reports on environmental technology advances and their potential economic impact, including identifying areas for HWD (Hazardous Waste Disposition) or similar hazardous property inventory systems, process improvements.
  • Collaborates with Business Process Analysts to support end users, capture system issues, and recommend solutions, ensuring compliance with new regulations and technology in hazardous property disposal
  • Serves as a liaison with military and federal agencies for information exchange and program coordination, representing DLA Disposition Services at meetings and conferences.

Qualification Summary

To qualify for a Environmental Protection Specialist, your resume and supporting documentation must support: A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Conducting audits of environmental operations and facilities, ensuring all hazardous materials/waste practices are in compliance with all DoD federal and state environmental requirements. Researching and capturing automated property management systems issues, and recommending solutions, ensuring compliance with new regulations and technology in hazardous property disposal. Researching, developing, and planning of environmental operations and programs. Identifying, analyzing, and correcting environmental deficiencies and determining the best disposal solutions. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
