Description

The forensic lab at the Kentucky State Police Electronic Crime Branch analyzes digital evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies throughout the Commonwealth. Kentucky State Police examiners receive top-notch forensic training and work with the most current hardware and software in the industry.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Receives training and performs entry-level analysis of digital media such as hard drives, laptops, cell phones and cameras for content of evidence pursuant to consent or search warrant.
  • Learns to perform detailed work duplicating digital media from evidence source to a working image for analysis.
  • Learns to document the digital evidence analysis process and prepare a final forensic analysis reports for the requesting agency and courtroom testimony.
  • Attends job-related courses and conferences to keep up-to-date on changing technology, computer forensic software and criminal activity relating to digital evidence.
  • Receives and learns to document evidence and maintain chain of custody from law enforcement agencies requesting analysis of digital evidence.
  • Assists other forensic examiners with keeping forensic work stations, operating systems, software patches, and security software up-to-date and operational in the Electronic Crime Branch.
  • Assists other forensic examiners and supervisory personnel with peer review of forensic analysis reports for quality assurance, and assists with technical calls from law enforcement agencies regarding digital evidence seizure, correct legal processes, and other assistance.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in computer science, information services, data communications and networks, digital forensic studies or a related field.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional experience working with computers and/or digital networking devices will substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.




SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Applicants for employment with the Office of the Attorney General must be 21 years of age and are subject to the provisions of KRS Chapter 15 and 503 KAR 1:140 relating to peace officer certification as administered by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council. For additional information, please refer to KRS 15.382, maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions

Work is usually performed in a secure office setting. Work is performed with computers and peripherals used for the forensic examination of digital evidence. May accompany investigators to crime scenes to perform digital forensic examinations on computers, networks, and media.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
