Job Summary

The Nurse Aide trainee (NAT) receives classroom and clinical training under the direct supervision of licensed clinical staff during the Nurse Aide Training Program. The NAT learns, applies and demonstrates all knowledge and skills learned during the Nurse Aide Training Program as directed and supervised by the Nurse Aide Training Program Coordinator and instructors. After successful completion of this training program, Nurse Aide Trainees will have the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the NYS Certified Nurse Aide Exam in order to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Nurse Aide Trainees provide direct and indirect care activities (under the direct supervision of the clinical supervisor) to assist residents/patients with activities of daily living. Core Job Responsibilities

Responsible for completing work assignments, being prompt, prepared for class and report as scheduled, and maintaining good attendance. Trains in providing care to residents/patients within the scope of a CNA. This may include bed bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, nail care, pericare, combing hair, back care, changing bed linen, cleaning overbed table and bedside stand, straightening room, and other general care as necessary throughout the day. Trains in assisting residents with toileting and provides general nursing care such as positioning residents, lifting and turning residents, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan or commode and ambulating the residents. Notifies appropriate licensed staff when resident has any change in condition and, when appropriate, records any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents including but not limited to:

changes in mental status, functional ability, meal and fluid intake, urinary bowel habits, emotional status. Performs all aspects of resident care in an environment that optimizes resident safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Trains in taking temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure at beginning of shift and as directed.

Reports abnormal findings immediately. Trains in making rounds and knows whereabouts of assigned residents. Trains in making rounds before the end of the shift to ensure the unit is left in good condition and residents are safe.

Provides report to licensed staff. Encourages resident attendance to activity programs and assists with transportation. Trains in checking for reddened areas or skin breakdown daily and notifies licensed staff.

Implements pressure relieving techniques and equipment. Trains in preparing residents for meals in a timely manner; serves and removes food trays in a timely manner.

Assists with meals or feeds residents, if necessary.

Utilizes adaptive equipment when indicated.

Reports poor intake to licensed staff. Ensures that adequate fluid is available to residents and assists as needed.

Distributes nourishments in a timely fashion.

Documents food and fluid consumption in a timely and accurate manner. Establishes and maintains positive interpersonal relationship with residents, family members and other facility personnel while assuring confidentiality of resident information Anticipates residents’ needs and makes rounds to assigned residents. Adheres to policies and procedures of the facility and MVHS. Within 10 days of successful completion of the Nurse Aide Training Program, trainees must take the NYS Certified Nurse Aide Exam. If unsuccessful after the first attempt, the NAT may take up to two additional attempts and must pass the exam within 120 days of hire into the program. Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED: No findings or convictions of abuse, mistreatment, neglect or misappropriation of resident property. PREFERRED: High School diploma or equivalent Licensure/Certification Requirements
